story telling

THERE'S NOTHING NEW ABOUT TODAY'S SOCIAL ENVIRONMENT, PEOPLE HAVE BEEN TELLING STORIES SINCE THE DAWN OF TIME.

It's just now we have so many magical ways of telling them.

It's like we're living in Neverland with stories of Prince Charming (Old Spice man), rags to riches (Ted Williams), ugly duckling to swan (Susan Boyle) and the lone vigilante fighting for truth (Wikileaks).

Stories told in 140 characters or less, linked to a source with the whole story. (Julian Assange would most likely call it scientific storytelling.)

What it is, is freedom of speech, freedom of expression and freedom of trade – and it's an open market.

A small company with a great product and a stunning idea can garner as much screen time/water cooler time as the big guys with their big pockets and loud voices.

Big companies can build relationships with the customers on the edges of their demographics that have been out of their reach for too long.

In fact, anything is possible.

However in new media, as in life and story, the hero's journey is not always filled with triumph. Fortunately production costs are down and media costs can be as low as zero, so failure looks like, well, nobody seeing what you've done. Just a failed experiment with valuable lessons learned and the opportunity to dust yourself off and move to the next chapter...
